Barlowe's Herbal Elixirs brings you a high quality Suma 4:1 Extract. The Suma Certificate of Analysis (COA) for this particular batch is shown above. In South America, Suma (Pfaffia paniculata) is known as "para toda", which means "for all things." It has been used in Brazil for centuries as a tonic and aphrodisiac. It is an important herbal remedy in the folk medicine of several rainforest Indian tribes today. Due to its anabolic action (it's a great source of Beta Ecdysterone), Suma is now used for building muscle. Bottled in Glass! No Stearates! No Fillers! No Junk!
***These vegetable-derived capsules (Vegan, Kosher and Halal certified) are filled on slow speed equipment and only pure, unadulterated herbal extract is contained in the capsules. There are no magnesium stearates, fillers, flow agents, gelatin, silicates, gluten, corn, wheat, rice, yeast, starch, titanium dioxide, artificial colors, artificial flavors or preservatives. Capsules produced with high speed equipment in herbal and dietary supplement "factories" generally contain several other ingredients, including powdered lubricants called STEARATES (which can greatly diminish an herb or supplement's absorption into the body). Check their labels! Barlowe also bottles his products in glass as he believes chemical vapors can vent from plastic containers and contaminate the contents and that glass is better for the environment.
Suma root contains 19 different amino acids, a large number of electrolytes, trace minerals, vitamins, and pantothenic acid. Its high germanium content probably accounts for its properties as an oxygenator. The root also contains novel phytochemicals including saponins, pfaffic acids, glycosides, and nortriterpenes. Suma has been called "the Russian secret," as it has been taken by Russian Olympic athletes for many years to increase muscle-building and endurance without the side effects (and urinalysis problems) associated with steroids. Suma's anabolic action is attributed to a phytochemical called Beta Ecdysterone and three novel ecdysteroid glycosides that are found in high concentrations in the herb. Suma is such a rich source of Beta Ecdysterone that it is the subject of a Japanese patent.
These same Japanese researchers filed a U.S. patent in 1998 for a proprietary extract of Suma (which extracted the Ecdysterone and Beta Ecdysterone). These researchers claimed (through various in vivo and in vitro studies) that their compound maintained health, enhanced the immune system, and had a tonic and an anti-allergenic effect.

Studies on Beta Ecdysterone (A Main Constituent of Suma): Research by Russian scientists Syrov and Kurmukov (1976) found that Ecdysterone had anabolic activity and increased protein synthesis. Animal studies in rats and Japanese quail have demonstrated significant anabolic effects (Slama et al., 1996; Dinan, 2001). Ecdysterone is also believed to have an anabolic effect in humans (Chermynkh et al., 1988; Simakin et al., 1988; Bizec et al., 2002; Chen et al., 2005). A Russian research study (Chermynkh et al., 1988) compared the muscle building activities of methandrostenolone, a powerful anabolic steroid, and Ecdysterone. They demonstrated that ecdysterone had a wider anabolic action than methandrostenolone on muscle contractile proteins. Another group of Russian researchers (Simakin et al., 1998) looked at the combined effects of Ecdysterone and a high protein diet. They found that when athletes combined a high protein diet with Ecdysterone, lean muscle mass increased by 6-7% and body-fat decreased by 10%.
